Absenteeism costs the UK economy companies £12 bn per year. The cost of absenteeism attributed to the private sector is an estimated £8 billion of the total. At a cost of £3.7 billion per year stress poses the greatest risk to UK businesses. The problem is compounded by additional personal expenses caused by stress and inactivity. HSE urges employers to implement a policy to help them identify the effects of stress early on to prevent long absences and develop solutions to assist employees to cope with stress and anxiety and minimise the negative effects to productivity.
