For many people presenting is considered a fate worse than death. The thought of presenting to a group may trigger heart palpitations, trembling of hands, or even sweating, blushing, a choking sensation; some may avoid making eye contact, stutter or say 'um' repeatedly; the list is endless.

Most of us need to communicate and interact with others in all aspects of our daily lives. Communicating helps us to get what we want, broadens our scope of opportunities and enables us to engage with others.

In order to develop new habits self-defeating behaviour patterns must be replaced with the attitudes, behaviours, traits and skills of a confident and rapport building presenter. Coaching will help you replace fear or anxiety with poise and composure so that you actually enjoy presenting to small or large audiences. You will begin to feel at ease interacting with colleagues or clients and look forward with anticipation instead of dread to social events.

Who can benefit?

People who need to be at ease presenting as part of their daily functions or occasionally for a press conference to announce a product launch or on a rare occasion to make a toast at a wedding can acquire the necessary skills with coaching. Some of the professions that come to mind are the press or media, sales directors, publicist, academics, politicians, actors, lawyers or mediators. Effective communication however is increasingly important in all aspects of life.

Planning and rehearsing are essential to project the right image, deliver the appropriate message, build rapport and appear knowledgeable and responsive in order to engage with the audience. Below are some of the key elements to consider:

  • Define audience i.e. culture, industry, demographics, needs etc
  • Structure presentation
  • Appeal to a number of senses; adapt behaviour, match body language, & adjust tone
  • Choose descriptive language accordingly
  • Provide relevant & accurate content
  • Select appropriate setting & time

Dynamic speakers have a number of traits that anyone can learn with practise. Some of these include:

Persuasive, powerful, understands needs of audience, inspires, appears relaxed, has a clear purpose/message/outcome, speaks to me and not at me, concise, charismatic, genuine, knowledgeable, makes eye contact …

Coaching will enable you to “say what you mean and mean what you say when presenting”.
